The plan of every traditional Indian building is laid over an 81-pada grid: a square divided nine by nine. Each pada is held by a devatā with its own quality and element. The grid is named for the Vāstu Puruṣa, the figure the tradition imagines folded across it, his navel at the still centre, Brahma. Hover any pada to read what the tradition places there.
