Ikra / Assam-type
Bamboo-reed seismic wall
Born in Assam, Northeast India.
How it works
A light timber frame with walls of reed (ikra) plastered in mud. The wall is so light and springy it rides out a quake and dries fast after a storm, and the thin, breathable skin suits the wet heat.
In a modern home
Lightweight framed infill and partition walls for humid, earthquake-prone regions, where a heavy wall is a liability.
What it answers
Built from
Source
Assam-type housing after the 1897 Assam earthquake; documented seismic performance.
